Rosen House Concert Series: March-May 2026
Caramoor’s Rosen House Concert Series is held in the exquisite Music Room of the historic home – a Mediterranean-style villa from 1939 filled with treasures from around the world. Audiences enjoy performances by some of today’s most in-demand artists in the same living room salon setting where the Rosens once entertained their many friends.
The spring Rosen House Concert Series opens on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 3pm, with the Schwab Vocal Rising Stars’ culminating performance, To the Sea. Every year, Schwab Vocal Rising Stars' Artistic Director Steven Blier selects four promising singers and a pianist for a week-long Caramoor residency that includes daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops, culminating in this concert in the Music Room. Assisted by Bénédicte Jourdois and developed in conjunction with the New York Festival of Song, this year’s program, To The Sea, is a hymn to the lure (and the menace) of the ocean, including works by Elgar, Guastavino, Rachmaninoff, Pauline Viardot, and Debussy. This year’s Schwab Vocal Rising Stars are Shiyu Zhuo, soprano; Anna Maria Vacca, mezzo-soprano; Nathan Romportl, tenor; Will Kim, baritone; and Luis Villarreal, piano. Tickets are free for audience members ages 18 and under.
On Friday, March 20, 2026 at 7:30pm, powerhouse Irish quintet Goitse performs at Caramoor as part of the Rosen House Concert Series. Born from Limerick’s Irish World Academy, these five exceptional musicians are taking traditional music to thrilling new heights. They have won hearts (and numerous awards) with their perfect blend of time-honored Irish tunes and their own fresh compositions. When Áine McGeeney’s expressive fiddle playing and vocals meet Colm Phelan’s award-winning bodhrán rhythms, something magical happens. Add Conal O’Kane’s masterful guitar work, Alan Reid’s versatile multi-instrumental talents, and Daniel Collins’ lively accordion, and audiences will be tapping their feet from start to finish.
The acclaimed Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson is next on the Concert Series, performing on Sunday, May 22, 2026 at 3pm. Ólafsson’s rare blend of technical mastery and poetic sensitivity has captivated audiences around the globe. Hailed for his visionary artistry, he has amassed over one billion streams and earned some of the highest accolades in classical music, including the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for his Goldberg Variations, BBC Music Magazine’s Album of the Year, and two Opus Klassik Awards for Solo Recording of the Year. He has also been named Gramophone’s Artist of the Year, Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year, and received the prestigious Icelandic Export Award, presented by the President of Iceland. Ólafsson’s Caramoor recital is an exploration of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in E major, Op. 109, which he contextualizes with the same composer’s E minor sonata, Op. 90, and works in both keys by Bach and Schubert.
The Junction Trio is next on the Rosen House Concert Series, performing on Sunday April 12, 2026 at 3pm. These three extraordinary soloists redefine chamber music with fearless creativity and electrifying synergy. Since coming together in 2015, violinist Stefan Jackiw, cellist Jay Campbell, and pianist Conrad Tao have dazzled audiences with performances that blend technical brilliance, emotional depth, and an adventurous spirit. Whether interpreting classical masterworks or trailblazing contemporary works, including music by Tao himself, the trio brings a fresh, dynamic energy to the stage. Their critically acclaimed appearances at Carnegie Hall, the 92nd Street Y, and Toronto’s Royal Conservatory have affirmed their place as one of today’s most exciting ensembles. At Caramoor, they perform Tao’s Eventide along with Piano Trios by Ravel and Schumann.
On Sunday, April 19, 2026 at 3pm, internationally renowned cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Connie Shih present an afternoon of deeply expressive, masterfully performed music. This is a not-to-be-missed chance to hear his interpretation of works by Beethoven, Schumann, Fauré, and Boulanger.

Second painting by early 20th-century American artist Amanda Brewster Sewell revealed during conservation

KATONAH, NY – Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, a vibrant cultural destination nestled on 81 acres of historic gardens and woodlands in Katonah, NY, announces the discovery of a complete hidden portrait concealed beneath a painting that has hung in the historic Rosen House for decades. The remarkable find was made by conservator Nadia Ghannam while preparing a circa 1901 portrait of Mrs. Charles S. Dodge (née Flora Bigelow) for treatment.
Both portraits were painted by American artist Amanda Brewster Sewell (1859-1926), and depict the same subject: Flora Bigelow Dodge (1868-1964), mother of Caramoor co-founder Lucie Bigelow Rosen (1890-1968). Amanda Brewster Sewell was an accomplished artist trained in New York and Paris, well-known during her lifetime, whose work has been forgotten in the intervening decades. She was the first woman to receive an award (the Thomas B. Clarke prize) from the National Academy of Design, having been elected an Associate in 1903. Her work featured in numerous early 20th-century exhibitions, including the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, where six of her works were exhibited. She was a medal winner at the Columbian Exposition that year, as well as at the Pan-American Exposition in 1901, Charleston Exposition in 1901-02, and the St. Louis Exposition in 1904.
“Finding a second complete portrait beneath the canvas we sent for conservation was completely unexpected,” said Jessa Krick, Director of Interpretation, Collection and Archives at the Rosen House. “Both paintings offer fascinating insights into Flora Dodge's life during a transformative period, which coincided with her divorce and her evolution as an independent woman at the turn of the 20th century. They are also significant in that they were repeat commissions by a woman from a woman artist, which was very unusual for the time.”
The discovery adds an intriguing layer to the history of Caramoor. Research is ongoing to determine when the earlier portrait was completed and why it was hidden. One possibility is that after her 1903 divorce from Charles Dodge, Flora preferred the more dramatic and seductive pose of the later portrait over the earlier, more formal depiction. Flora Dodge's story appears as a case study in April White's 2021 book The Divorce Colony, which chronicles how wealthy New York women traveled to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in the early 1900s to obtain no-fault divorces, which were unavailable to them in New York. Another theory suggests the double framing may have helped evade customs when Flora sent the painting from London to her daughter Lucie in New York in 1964.
Lucie Bigelow was eleven years old when Sewell painted her portrait, around the same time as her mother's second portrait. This early exposure to a working female artist appears to have influenced young Lucie, who maintained a lifelong interest in art and artists, seeking out exhibitions of all types and befriending artists in New York and London throughout her adult life.
“The Rosen House has always been at the heart of Caramoor, filled with the music and art the family loved, says Caramoor President and CEO Gillian Fox. “We continue to be intrigued by new discoveries like this one and are honored to conserve and share the House and Collection with the public. We can't wait for visitors to discover Flora Dodge’s hidden portrait for themselves when they come to Caramoor.”
Both portraits are on view in the Rosen House and can be seen during Caramoor's Holiday Rosen House Tours, running December 10 to 21, 2025 at 12:30pm and 1pm daily (by advance ticket purchase only; no tours on December 15). The art-filled Rosen House is decked out for the holidays with decorations inspired by the Rosen family archive. The House itself offers a number of treasures, including complete 18th-century rooms, originally from private villas and chateaux in Italy, France, and England. The Formal Dining Room features doors thought to have been designed by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1695-1770), made for a Venetian palace. The Music Room includes Renaissance furniture and architectural elements such as the intricately carved coffered ceiling from a house in Lecce, Italy; a pair of pink marble twisted columns from Verona, once in the collection of William Randolph Hearst; and a magnificent Franco-Flemish tapestry titled “The Holy Family.”
Caramoor is also producing a short documentary about the discovery of the hidden painting, featuring interviews with experts filmed on location. The film will explore the discovery process and celebrate the remarkable women at the center of this story.
The conservation of the newly discovered portrait was made possible by a grant from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network. A period frame has been acquired and restored by Ammi Ribar of Hudson, New York, to display the newly revealed work alongside its companion piece.
The NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Grant Treatment Program is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

KATONAH, NY – Fresh from winning the Grand Prize at the 2025 Banff International String Quartet Competition, and just three years after forming, the Poiesis Quartet (violinists Sarah Ying Ma and Max Ball, violist Jasper de Boor, and cellist Drew Dansby) begins its season as the 2025-2026 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, giving the first concert of the residency as part of the Rosen House Concert Series on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at 3pm.
Caramoor is a vibrant cultural destination nestled on 81 acres of historic gardens and woodlands in Katonah, NY. Once the home of music and art lovers Walter and Lucie Rosen, Caramoor has evolved into one of the region’s most distinctive destinations for live performances, cultural engagement, and exploration. Its Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence program was founded in 1999, and annually supports an exceptional emerging string quartet. The year-long residency includes three performances at Caramoor and two 10-day periods (November 11-21, 2025 and April 27-May 5, 2026) in which the Quartet works with students in local schools. One thousand students will benefit from engagements in 11 schools across Westchester County. The Quartet-in-Residence program extends access to the arts for high school students by providing one-to-one mentoring with professional musicians, giving students insight into pursuing a career in the arts. Caramoor also commissions a new work by a composer of the Quartet's choosing – the Poiesis Quartet will premiere the new piece written for the group at Caramoor in summer 2026.
Formed in 2022 at Oberlin, the Poiesis Quartet (pronounced poy-EE-suhss), has swiftly risen to prominence. In addition to being the Grand Prize winners of the 2025 Banff International String Quartet, the ensemble is also the winner of the 2023 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Renowned for their cohesive artistry and adventurous programming, the group lives up to its name – poiesis, from the Greek “to make” – with performances that forge new paths in chamber music. Dedicated to championing the voices of emerging and historically underrepresented composers, the Poiesis Quartet brings this vibrant mission to life in their Caramoor residency.
The Poiesis Quartet’s program for its November 16 concert, titled Surfacing, is an exploration of the raw, human responses to existential and life-altering events. Incorporating musical influences as varied as electronic dance music, East Asian folk tunes, R&B, jazz, gospel, and traditional spirituals, four composers take us on a journey through phases of healing and growth, ultimately surfacing from confusion and pain with resilience and a renewed sense of hope. The concert includes String Quartet by Brian Raphael Nabors (2024); String Quartet No. 3 (2014) and String Quartet No. 7, “Surfacing” (2024) by Kevin Lau (commissioned by the Poiesis Quartet); Many Many Cadences by Sky Macklay (2015); Calvary, an African-American spiritual arranged for violin quartet by Max Ball; and String Quartet No. 1, Calvary by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (1956). Tickets are free for audience members ages 18 and under.
The Poiesis Quartet’s second performance as part of the Rosen House Concert Series takes place on Sunday, May 3, 2026 at 3pm, and includes Michi Wiancko’s To Unpathed Waters, Undreamed Shores (2020); Eleanor Alberga’s String Quartet No. 2 (1994); and Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5 (1934). Tickets are free for audience members ages 18 and under.
In addition to the Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence program, as part of its ongoing commitment to mentorship for young musicians Caramoor offers the Evnin Rising Stars program, which has nurtured emerging talent since 1992. Each year, the program’s Artistic Director Marcy Rosen identifies some of the most promising musicians at the cusp of professional careers, bringing them to Caramoor for a weeklong chamber music residency with distinguished artist mentors. This year’s mentors are violinist Ani Kavafian and violist Rebecca Albers. The 2025 Evnin Rising Stars are violinists Isabelle Ai Durrenberger, Clara Neubauer, and Cherry Choi Tung Yeung; violists Samuel Rosenthal and Luther Warren; cellists Annie Jacobs-Perkins and Leland Ko; and pianist Evren Ozel. The Evnin Rising Stars will give two Rosen House Concert Series performances on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 3pm (featuring music by Boccherini, Ginastera, and Brahms) and Sunday, November 2, 2025 at 3pm (featuring music by Mozart, Shostakovich, and Dvořák). Tickets are free for audience members ages 18 and under.

The Arcadian Wild takes the stage in the Music Room on Friday, November 21, 2025 at 7:30pm. This Nashville-based ensemble is known for its intricate, heartfelt acoustic sound. Led by songwriters Isaac Horn (guitar) and Lincoln Mick (mandolin), joined by Bailey Warren on fiddle and Erik Coveney on bass, the group is celebrated for their rich arrangements and vivid storytelling. The Arcadian Wild’s latest album, Welcome, draws on everything from country and classical to pop and choral music with lush, cinematic arrangements that balance the intellectual and the emotional in equal measure. Though the group tours and records without a drummer, their songs are deeply rooted in rhythmic propulsion, driven by intricately interlocking instrumental and vocal parts that cohere into a deceptively effortless whole.
