Yolanda Kondonassis To Release Ginastera Centennial CD in October 2016
Internationally acclaimed harpist Yolanda Kondonassis has recorded Ginastera’s iconic Harp Concerto with the Oberlin Symphony Orchestra as part of a Ginastera Centennial album, which will be released by Oberlin Music and distributed by Naxos in October 2016. As co-executive producer of the album (along with Oberlin Conservatory of Music's Dean, Andrea Kalyn), Kondonassis considers it to be a labor of love and gratitude to Maestro Ginastera for his important contribution to the harp repertoire.
The Centennial tribute also features Ginastera works performed by violinist Gil Shaham, pianist Orli Shaham, Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux, and the Oberlin Symphony Orchestra. James O'Leary's extensively researched liner notes and historical photos of the composer by Boosey & Hawkes will accompany the recordings in the CD package.
Since its premiere in 1965, Alberto Ginastera's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra has acquired an almost cult status as the definitive harp concerto of the 20th century. With its pulsing Latin rhythms, virtuosic displays, and creative use of many unique colors and special effects, the work has received numerous performances during the past several decades, more than a hundred of which have been performed by Yolanda Kondonassis.
