Cypress String Quartet's Final Call & Response Concert, March 11

The Cypress String Quartet's final, 17th Annual Call & Response program will explore the theme of “Tragedy & Comedy” and feature the world premiere of composer Dan Coleman’s String Quartet No. 3, “together, as the river.” Coleman’s new piece will be performed alongside the two works that inspired it, Beethoven’s first (Op. 18, No. 1) and last (Op. 135) quartets, on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 8pm at Herbst Theatre. More information and tickets are available here.

Dan Coleman was the first composer commissioned by the Cypress Quartet, so it is fitting that he will be the last composer commissioned as part of the ensemble’s signature Call & Response program. The Cypress announced on January 21, 2016 that the ensemble will disband in the summer of 2016 after 20 fulfilling years of performing together. The Cypress Quartet’s decision comes after a great deal of reflection and discussion, and the quartet agrees that it is the right time for them to move on to explore new artistic territories as individuals.

Coleman’s new piece, his third string quartet written for the Cypress Quartet, is dedicated in memory of composer Jeffery Cotton, who died in 2013 and was the Cypress’s Call & Response commissioned composer in 2004 and 2011. The title of Coleman’s piece is taken from a poem by Louise Glück, which inspired him, called “Song of the River.”
