ACME performs at The Kitchen with Charlemagne Palestine and in music by Reich, Glass, Monk, Eastman, Byrd

March 15, 2016

The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) performs two concerts on April 9 and 10, exploring music by seminal artists whose work has been fostered by and performed at The Kitchen over the years, as part of The Kitchen's ongoing series "From Minimalism into Algorithm."

The first concert on April 9 includes Philip Glass' Piece in the Shape of a Square performed by violists Nadia Sirota and Caleb Burhans; Steve Reich's Violin Phase performed by Ben Russell; Joseph Byrd's Animals for prepared piano (Peter Dugan) and ensemble; plus Byrd's Water Music for amplified percussion and tape performed by Chris Thompson.

For the second concert on April 10, Charlemagne Palestine joins ACME to lead a performance of his landmark work Strumming Music. The artist-composer, now based in Brussels, has conceived of a new version of this piece specifically for this performance, created for strings, piano, vibraphone, and guitar.

ACME's April 10 program also includes Meredith Monk's rarely performed Stringsongs and Julius Eastman's The Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc for ten cellos. All but a fragment of a score for Eastman work has been lost, but this recording of a live performance (date unknown) at New York's Third Street Music Settlement was released in 2005 by New World Records. From the recording, cellist and ACME Artistic Director Clarice Jensen has made a transcription of the piece, which will be performed for the first time at The Kitchen, where the piece was premiered in 1981.

ACME musicians performing during these concerts include Ben Russell, violin; Caleb Burhans, violin and viola; Nadia Sirota, viola; Clarice Jensen, cello; Peter Dugan, piano; Chris Thompson, percussion; Grey Mcmurray, guitar; with additional cellists Hamilton Berry, Emily Brausa, Gabriel Cabezas, Chris Gross, Michael Haas, Alexandra Jones, Clara Kennedy, Caitlin Sullivan, and Paul Wianko.
