Jan 24: Sarah Cahill leads Lou Harrison Centennial Celebration at SF Performances' PIVOT Festiva
On Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 8:30pm, “sterling pianist and intrepid illuminator of the classical avant-garde” (The New York Times) Sarah Cahill continues her 2017-2018 tour across the country and in Japan in celebration of visionary California composer Lou Harrison’s 2017 centennial in a performance presented by SF Performances’ PIVOT: New Adventures in the Performing Arts at A.C.T.’s Strand Theater (1127 Market Street).
On this program of Harrison’s solo piano and chamber music, Cahill will perform Summerfield Set for solo piano and will be joined by violinist Kate Stenberg, the Alexander String Quartet, and the William Winant Percussion Group for Varied Trio for piano, violin, and percussion, Quartet Set for string quartet, Song of Quetzlcoatl for percussion, Threnody for Carlos Chavez for viola and percussion, and Music for Violin with Various Instruments for violin, psaltery, mbiras, and portable organ.
The William Winant Percussion Group will be using instruments willed to Winant by Lou Harrison, many of them built by him and his life partner Bill Colvig, including the mbiras used in Music for Violin with Various Instruments.
