October 22, 2018

On Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 7:30pm, Japanese composer, conductor and pianist Joe Hisaishi will present the next installment in his Music Future series, Music Future Vol. 5, at Zankel Hall at Carneige Hall with music by Hisaishi and Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer David Lang. The concert is co-produced by Bang on a Can and Wonder City, and features soloists Maya Beiser, cello and Molly Netter, voice with Mivos Quartet and the Bang on a Can Festival Ensemble, comprised of alumni of the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival. Music Future Vol. 5 will also be presented in Tokyo at Yomiuri Otemachi Hall on November 21 and 22, 2018.

The program includes the U.S. premiere of 2 Pages Recomposed 2018 by Joe Hisaishi (based on Philip Glass’s Two Pages from 1968) as well as David Lang’s increase, both performed by Mivos Quartet and the Bang on a Can Festival Ensemble; plus the U.S. premiere of David Lang’s prayers for night and sleep featuring Maya Beiser, solo cellist and Molly Netter, solo vocalist, with Mivos and the Ensemble; and the world premiere of Joe Hisaishi’s The Black Fireworks 2018 for cello and chamber orchestra, also featuring Beiser as the soloist.

This is the fifth time Hisaishi has presented his ongoing Music Future series in New York and Japan. He says of this series, which has previously presented the music of Arnold Schoenberg, John Adams, Philip Glass, and Bryce Dessner, “Ethnicity, religion and the way we look – none of these matters when it comes to music. What matters is that it’s good music. For centuries, music has inspired us, relieved our deep sorrow and created hopes for the future. I hope to take an active part in bringing the world together with the power of music.”
