Jupiter Quartet in Virtual Events at University of Illinois, Middlebury College, University of Iowa

In November 2020, the Jupiter String Quartet presents performances and outreach activities at educational institutions across the country – the University of Illinois, Middlebury College, University of Iowa.

On Friday, November 6 at 3pm CT, in a collaboration between the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES), Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE), Krannert Center, and the University of Illinois School of Music, the Jupiter Quartet offers a virtual performance from Smith Hall of Michi Wiancko’s To Unpathed Waters, Undreamed Shores. Following the performance, NRES Associate Professor Daniel Miller and Krannert Center’s Associate Director for Artistic Services Tammey Kikta will moderate a conversation with the members of Jupiter String Quartet and Wiancko. The event is free to watch via Zoom and advance registration is available here.

This work was originally intended as part of the Jupiter's fall performance at Krannert Center as the University of Illinois' quartet-in-residence. It celebrates the beauty and vitality of the natural world, suggesting hope and inspiration as humanity addresses fears and worries for our planet. Listeners will travel through deserts, forests, and along coastlines and glaciers, visiting grand landscapes, colorful birds, and fascinating underwater creatures. Embedded in the work will also be sonic interpretations of extreme weather events related to droughts, fires, and rising sea levels as influenced by climate change. Wiancko writes, “I believe that a musical work that engages with regeneration, resilience, and collective humanity has the potential to be a powerful and unique contribution to the string quartet repertoire.”

This marks the Champaign-Urbana premiere of the work and was written for the Jupiter String Quartet with commissioning support from Bay Chamber Concerts in celebration of the organization’s 60th anniversary and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The world premiere was a virtual performance on August 6, 2020 presented by Bay Chamber Concerts.

On Friday, November 13, 2020 at 7:30pm ET, the Jupiter String Quartet is presented for the ninth time by the Middlebury Performing Arts Series. This year’s online performance was recorded at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, where the ensemble has been artists-in-residence since 2012. This free performance concludes the Jupiter’s online residency at Middlebury College and will be available online at Advance registration at For this performance, the quartet will play Wiancko’s To Unpathed Waters, Uncharted Shores alongside George Walker’s “Lyric” from his String Quartet No. 1 and Mendelssohn’s Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 12.

From November 16-20, 2020, the Jupiter Quartet will be the featured guest artists in the University of Iowa's String Quartet Residency Program. In the past, this distinctive program has brought four nationally recognized professional string quartets to campus for extended residences each year for public performances, master classes, and interdisciplinary seminars. This year, the University has adapted its program to an online format, and the activities will be available only to students at the University of Iowa.
